Announcing: Me, The Doula

Well friends, I am announcing something exciting today. Today is the birth of my new business. I have guided myself through three wonderful drug-free births and I want to teach others how to do the same. I want to help women cope with their birthing (whether it is drug-free or not!) and offer childbirth and postpartum education to pregnant women.

You may already know that I write about fertility, infertility, and reproductive health and manage the website and blog for a major infertility website. Those things are not going away anytime soon.

My new business journey is that I am beginning the process of training to become a certified labor and postpartum doula. I want to offer support to women and their families as they prepare to welcome their sweet new babies into the world. I want to add a new dimension to my business that so compliments my writing business. Over the next year or two I hope to start working directly with families during birth and postpartum.

Becoming a childbirth and breastfeeding educator has long been a dream of mine, and now that my own pregnancy and birthing experiences are over (God willing), I cannot wait to assist, teach, and guide other women to experience peaceful and rewarding birth and motherhood experiences themselves.

I have heard from (and personally know of) many women that had a really difficult time adjusting to life with their newborns. I know many women that were not prepared for the reality of childbirth and postpartum. I want to help new mommies, to be an educator and support person, to help them experience a more gentle transition and a more harmonious motherhood experience. I want to help couples prepare for the challenges, and be there to help them find support and resources in those first exhausting, weepy, tearful yet blissed-out days with their helpless crying newborns.

I plan to secure certification from a variety of organizations, including DONA International, so that I can be fully informed and offer the best birthing and postpartum education to my clients.

This feels perfect. Through writing about fertility and infertility, I can help people get pregnant. I can also be there to support them when it is time to birth and bring the baby home.

Wish me luck and stay tuned as I document my journey here.

My journey to become a doula.

 I. am. so. excited.
